In the case of the Hurricane MkllD and MklV aircraft, the 40mm cannons were fired electro-pneumatically by a push button in the throttle lever; this could only happen by first operating the cannon master switch on the left side of the cockpi t. In the case of a m isfi re there was a cannon-cocking lever, also on the left side of the cockpit. RP were fired in the same manner as the 40mm ~ons, using the push button on the throttle lever. An RP selector switch, located below the left ide of the windscreen, was used to select the rockets to be fired, either in pair or as a salvo.

The modification to the merchant ship con isted mainly of a rocket catapult fitted to the forecastle of the ship, and two 75foot (23-m) rails, slightly angled away from the ship's structure. The idea was that the ship sailed full speed into wind, and the sol id-fuel rockets accelerated the THE HURRICANE MKII THE HURRICANE MKII Hurricane to a safe flying speed (about 8085mph/125-135kph). As for any plans to recover the Hurricane - there were none! The only hope was that, if the Hurricane wa's in range of land, it could recover safely; otherwise, the sea was the only option, the preferred option being to bale out close to the ship rather than to ditch.

One Hurricane (Z2326) was fitted with Rolls-Royce BF (belt-fed) 40mm cannons, and went through various air tests during late 1941. These cannons were bigger than the Vickers'S' gun and carried fewer rounds (ten to twelve). Following a major failure of the Rolls-Royce BF cannon, any ideas of producing it for the MkIlD were shelved, and it was decided that the Vickers' , gun would be the MkllD's standard armament. The first squadron to be equipped with the Hurricane MkllD was 6 quadron, based at Shandur in Egypt, which took delivery of its first aircraft during the spring of 1942.
