And I’ll be dammed if those Germans don’t pick this night to raid. M. the alarm sounded. You could hear people running in the street in about fifteen seconds on their way to the shelter. We had the windows and shutters shut, so could see nothing. Frank finally got up after the guns started and we heard a couple of bombs in the distance. I was going to stay in bed, but in about ten minutes one came near enough to rattle the windows, so I got up. And this was the first night’s sleep in a bed in sixteen days (and the next night I am probably going off to that island and will get no sleep there either).

Then Carl Coon, a former Harvard anthropologist and Arab specialist who was in North Africa long before the invasion, and more recently has been up at the Tunisian front, comes back to Algiers. I have never seen a man so close to a nervous breakdown. He has been out on patrol in enemy territory, strafed by the Germans, besieged in a lighthouse at Captain Svuerat while booby trapping in enemy territory. When I saw him it seemed impossible for him to stand or sit still for even one second. I should judge him to be about 42 or 43, a swell person, with a marvelous sense of humor.
